Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is a rare item – an original, unused World War II Japanese dogtag obtained from Nakata Shoten in Tokyo, Japan.
For those not familiar with Nakata Shoten, it is Japan’s premier military equipment establishment and was originally established in the immediate post-war years as a military surplus store. Over the decades, it has evolved into much, much more – the owner accumulated an incredible collection of original military equipment and uniforms, and now in addition to surplus, also sells the highest quality reproduction items ranging from Nambu machine guns to WWII Japanese uniforms to military timepieces. Mr. Nakata had some original, unused Japanese dogtags from World War II and he buffed the tarnish off them, strung them with cord (he was unsure if the cord is original or reproduction – we believe these cords are reproduction), and used to sell them at his shop.
Japanese World War II dogtags are called ninshikihyo (
認識票
) and were typically brass or aluminum with rectangular holes punched on each end through which cord was inserted.
It was then worn around the neck like American dogtags, or over the shoulder and down across the chest.
Enlisted dogtags listed the major unit, minor unit, and serial number; officer dogtags included the name.
This dogtag is brass, unused and has no engraving on it whatsoever.
It is original and in automotive terms, is ‘New Old Stock’— absolutely perfect for anyone collecting WWII Japanese military items or for the military reenactor.
